About the Deregulated Electricity Market

The Texas electricity market in many parts of the state is deregulated. That means YOU can choose who to buy your electricity from.

ALL electricity service is delivered to your home by a single company - that company operates the power grid for your area.  In deregulated parts of North Texas, that company is Oncor. In the Houston area, that company is CenterPoint Energy. There are other grid operators.

If you live in an area that is not deregulated, you are served by a minicipal-owned or user-owned  power grid operator, and cannot change your provider.  This is the case in San Antonio, Austin and the northeastern parts of the DFW Metroplex (where the grid provider is CoServe Electric), as well as other un-deregulated parts of Texas. Your choice of an energy retailer DOES NOT affect --- AT ALL-- whether you receive electricity at your location. No matter who you choose, - if there is a power outage, it is the power grid operator that you notify, and that fixes the problem. No power outage is the fault of your retail energy company.
Your choices for rates are affected by:
  • The term of your contract
  • The time of year your contract comes due for renewal
  • The source of your energy (solar, natural gas, oil, wind, etc.)
  • The type of pricing you want (time of day or one rate all the time)
Your choice of a Retail Energy Provider DOES affect:
  • The quality / accuracy / timeliness of your bills
  • The availability of some provider features (credit card payment, airline miles, live customer service representatives, etc.)
  • And most importantly, the PRICE you pay per kilowatt hour (kWh)
